Located at No.1 Dale Street, our fifth Permit Room project involved working with a building of real presence, balancing its historic fabric with the character of Permit Room.

Originally constructed between 1856 and 1858 to a design by architect Charles Robert Cockerell, the Grade II listed building sits within a part of Liverpool characterised by its grand, civic scale and monumental architecture.

Spanning 5,300 sq ft at ground floor level, with 140 covers, the scheme works carefully with the existing building. The decorative listed ceiling, with its vaulted profile and ornate cornice, remains fully visible above the new interventions and is finished in a single sea green tone.

With so much significant historic fabric, the design here needed to respond directly to the building, rather than follow what we’ve done before with Permit Room. The material palette is honest, prioritising quality natural materials and the way they are put together. There is still a playfulness in pattern and colour, but it sits more quietly against the 19th century architecture.

Geometric terrazzo flooring, honed marble bar tops and a collection of vintage cabinets form the back bar. A generously scaled glazed timber screen separates the bar dining area from the breakfast room, while maintaining a visual connection between the two.

Music, as a key part of the Permit Room identity, is given a clear presence within the space. A DJ desk sits at the point of arrival, beneath an extended canopy off the entrance on Dale Street. Alongside this, a hand painted playlist and a vintage jukebox help to anchor that part of the room.

The space is shaped by artwork from contemporary Bombay creatives and emerging South Asian artists. Vintage furniture, lighting and screens have been sourced in India and painstakingly restored by specialist craftspeople before being brought to the UK.
