The Devonshire private dining room

London

We were invited by The Devonshire, Soho’s much-loved pub and one of London’s most celebrated dining destinations, to design a series of new private dining spaces within the neighbouring building on Sherwood Street. Set across two upper floors, the three spaces extend the character of The Devonshire, but each has its own distinct personality.

On the third floor, two interconnected dining rooms seat up to 24 and 40 guests. A dividing screen allows the rooms to operate independently or open up as a single space for up to 60. The rooms combine gloss-painted walls in Farrow & Ball’s Inchyra Blue, oak panelling and vintage furniture with multi-tiered amber glass chandeliers, while soft taupe linen drapes line the windows and walls, softening the darker finishes.

On the fourth floor, walls, ceilings and joinery are finished throughout in high-gloss Farrow & Ball Eating Room Red. A pair of large vintage Holophane globe pendants hang over a single table seating up to 20 guests, with bentwood chairs, taupe linen drapes and artwork throughout.

Artwork is an important part of the interiors, filling the walls of the dining rooms, corridors and stairways, alongside a mix of vintage and salvaged pieces including internal doors, a glazed screen and a vintage wooden fridge. Vintage merbau parquet runs through the dining rooms, corridors and stair landings, with solid merbau treads and cast brass nosings continuing through the staircase.

At street level, a new gloss-painted green timber shopfront with cream detailing and hand-painted signage marks the separate entrance on Sherwood Street. Inside, a hand-cut black and white marble mosaic incorporates The Devonshire’s stag motif into the entrance lobby floor.

The connection to the pub becomes more direct at ground floor. A sign-written one-way mirror gives arriving guests a view into The Devonshire bar next door, while a small beer hatch through the oak panelling allows them to grab a pint from the bar before heading upstairs.
