A new chapter begins above Permit Room on Portobello Road. Two bedrooms, a generous living space, and a dash of Bombay charm – an invitation to stay, linger, and feel part of the story.  

Tucked above Permit Room on Portobello Road, we’ve meticulously crafted Dishoom’s first-ever overnight guest experience – a natural next chapter for Dishoom. The lodgings comprise two ensuite bedrooms and a generous living space, inviting guests to immerse themselves in the charm and character of a Bombay residence.  

Our approach draws on the design language of Bombay residences, paired with the relaxed character of Portobello Road. The two-bedroom residence features ensuite rooms, a welcoming lounge, and a dedicated dining area, complete with a turntable and curated vinyl collection – a subtle nod to Permit Room’s deep-rooted love of toe-tapping music.  

To evoke the feeling of staying in the apartment of a well-travelled protagonist, we took inspiration from Bombay’s Kekee Manzil; the historic home of a family instrumental in shaping India’s modern art movement. Further influences come from the elegant designs of celebrated Bombay hotels; bespoke beds recall the timeless aesthetic of the Bentleys Hotel, while panelling and vibrant hues echo the sophisticated ambience of the Sea Green Hotel.  

Throughout the lodgings, more than 30 original artworks by established and emerging South Asian artists deepen the sense of place. Many furnishings were hand-selected from Bombay’s markets – from a vintage cocktail cabinet to a full-length dressing table and rattan armchairs – bringing a sense of story, craft, and personality to the residence.  

While the ground floor houses Permit Room’s all-day bar-café and the first floor offers a distinct dining room, it’s the residential experience above that truly sets this Portobello location apart. 

The Permit Room lodgings at 186 Portobello Rd, London W11 1LA, officially opened its doors in June 2025.
